GUIDELINES FOR
SUBMITTING ART

Submitting Line Art

Line illustrations include charts, graphs, diagrams, most maps, and other art containing no shades of gray or variations in tone. Very simple line drawings can often be typeset along with the manuscript and may, with production approval, be submitted in manuscript form. More complex line art–including any with shades of gray ("screens") must be professionally redrawn by hand or on computer. We urge our authors to hire a professional drafter, graphic designer, cartographer, or autographer (music setting). If you intend to do this, please see "Preparing camera-ready line art" below.

Line art from another book can sometimes be reproduced from the printed original, with the copyright owner's permission'but how much it can be enlarged or reduced may be limited. Please get a production assessment if you intend to do this.

Preparing Camera-ready Line Art

Computer-generated

Art should be submitted in EPS or TIFF(MAC & PC) formats, created with Adobe Illustrator, Freehand, or Photoshop. Please name files with their numbers and graphic types, e.g.: Fig.12.tif, map 3.eps, etc. Supply a printout of each piece of electronic art. Be sure to include all fonts on your disk, even if they are embedded in the files. Save each illustration separately.

Do not place art in a Ms Word file. Do not compress files with JPG, Stuffit, PKZip, or LZW.

For scanned line art on a disk, scan illustrations at 1200 dpi scanner resolution using Adobe Photoshop, and save as TIFFs. Size to 5 x7 at 100%.

Please submit a sample disk early in the process, so that the production department can ensure that it is usable.

Please supply a list of files on all disks

For all line art

Omit the main title from the area. It will be set by the typesetter.

Shading or screen tints should not be used. Black and white patterns are okay. Lines should be .5(one-half) point width or greater.

Most of our books use a 5 1/2 x 8 1/ 4 , or a 6 1/8 x 9 1/4 format, which would require art in widths of 4" and 4 1/2 " , and depths of 6 1/2" to 7 1/4" respectively. Your book may have a different format; check with the production coordinator and designer for confimation.

Please set type to appear between 8 pt and 11 pt in the finished artwork. For most books, set type for figures in either Helvetica or Univers. Some books will need other fonts-check with the designer, please.

Submitting Photographs

For original photographs

Please supply clear, sharp 5 x 7 or 8 x 10 photos, or color slides or transparencies. We can use negatives if necessary, but a color-correct printed version must be supplied as well with a color negative. Please send photocopies of each with any cropping marked on the photocopies.

When having photos taken, use a professional photographer, and photograph objects on a white background.

We can use photos taken from a printed source, i.e. photos that have already been screened, but we must have either a good photo of the printed original, or the printed original itself. Quality will be significantly lower than with an original photo.

Laser printed copies and xeroxes are not acceptable originals.

Electronic form

We don't recommend submitting photos in electronic form, but if there is no alternative:

Scan to final printed size or larger at 300 pixels/inch, and save as a TIFF file. Save color in CMYK mode.

Do not scan printed photos without descreening them-submit the printed photo itself if you can't descreen.

Supply some kind of color-correct hard copy version with a scan of a color photo.

Supply a list of files on any disks.
