The publication of this comprehensive catalogue marks the culmination of an extraordinarily prolific, more than twenty-year-long phase in the evolution of The Metropolitan Museum’s Department of Medieval Art and The Cloisters and celebrates the distinguished career of William D. Wixom at The Metropolitan, first as the Michel David-Weill Chairman and currently as curator emeritus of the Medieval department. Highlighted in these pages are more than three hundred purchases and gifts, the great majority of which have been on view but many of which have remained unpublished until now. The catalogue entries were written by present as well as former curators in the Department of Medieval Art, all recognized experts in a particular period or field.
