Applicants should indicate their first and second choice of department from the following:
Acquisitions Editorial
A basic administrative position with the possibility for more interesting work as the interns prove their abilities. The interns will spend approximately 50% of their time with basic administrative tasks: filing, photocopying, web research, mailing (including a few large mailings), generating reject letters, etc. Approximately 25% of their time will be spent dealing with the peer review process: researching readers, contacting readers, collating and mailing materials for readers, etc. The remaining (approximately) 25% of their time will be spent in manuscript assessment/preparation: reading and writing summaries of manuscripts, estimating the printed length of manuscripts, and preparing manuscripts for release into editing and production.
Manuscript Editorial
The Manuscript Editorial Department shepherds manuscripts from submission to the Press through their final printed and electronic forms. Editors in the department copyedit manuscripts and work with freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers. Interns in this department assist editors by checking page proofs, indexes, and final files from typesetters.
Design and Production
The Production department is responsible for coordinating the production and manufacturing of each book: writing out the schedule for various stages of the book, trafficking materials between design and editorial/managing editorial, estimating costs, and choosing a typesetter, a printer, and binder for books and their jackets/cover. The Design department is responsible for designing interior book pages, photo-researching and designing jackets/covers of books, checking the work of typesetters, and preparing artwork for interiors. The department summer intern will aid in various duties including, but not limited to: filing, scanning, image preparation, and creating paperback mechanicals. Knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Photoshop helpful.
Marketing Department
Marketing is involved with the promotion of all Yale University Press books, with a special focus on outreach to educators. The department handles exhibits, space advertising, catalogues, online marketing and social media, and direct mail outreach to teachers. Summer interns usually help with shipping out exhibits and logging in results; producing advertisements for scholarly journals; setting up catalogues in our database; lending a hand with catalogue production; entering reviews in our database; blogging; conducting social media outreach; proofreading; and general office assistance.
Publicity Department
The Publicity Department is responsible for working with the media to increase the coverage of YUP books in print, radio, tv, and online venues. Publicists send out books (including mailings of galleys and advance copies) to prospective reviewers, handle incoming requests from various media, create press releases, and schedule author interviews. Summer interns will help with mailings of galleys and finished books; track our media contacts in print, radio, tv, and online; circulate reviews; and create our holiday giftbook catalog, which is mailed at the end of the summer.
Sales Department
The Sales department works with accounts of all types, mainly retailers and distributors, on placement of our forthcoming titles, and maintenance of backlist, through strong buyer relationships and special sales. We are also currently working on the development of eBook technology and its distribution channels. We are seeking clerical, assistant level, and research support; interns report to the Sales Assistant and Director of Sales. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in book publishing, marketing, or business.
Digital Publishing
Reporting to the Director of Digital Publishing, these individuals will assist with a number of projects to help define and implement both Press-wide and initiative-specific priorities. Strong interest or experience in one or more of the following is a plus: strategic planning, product management, strategic marketing, business analysis, product development, consulting, online media, technology, or publishing industries. Responsibilities over the summer include: executing existing digital initiatives; new product planning and identifying new digital businesses that build upon existing assets at the Press or Yale University (e.g., online art offering, Apps, etc); and refining YUP’s online strategy.
Intellectual Property
This intern will work closely with the Contracts Administrator and the Intellectual Property/Contracts Director to assist in the processing of YUP contracts. Duties include filing and organizing comprehensive physical and electronic contract files; entering data and maintaining the contracts database; and assisting with rights and permissions projects as needed. Careful attention to detail is required.
